Good Food & Wine Show 2011

May 28, 2011 · 35 comments

You know what I hate? When my sandwich gets caught on my tooth.

I also hate it when you realise you need to turn around when you’re walking somewhere busy, and you feel you should do something like look at your watch and act surprised before turning around so you don’t look weird just turning around unexpectedly.

Most of all I hate giving someone bad news. And by someone I mean you. And by bad I mean free. And by news I mean tickets. And by hate I mean love.

Erm.

Look! A talking dog!

Yes, for making it this far through this post, you deserve a treat! I have two double passes to the upcoming Good Food and Wine Show in Perth to give away, so you may well find yourself trying to decide who to take along for a day of lashings of free food samples, watching celebrity chefs ham (bacon?) it up on stage, and tasting your way through enough wines to have you needing a bit of maple bacon action yourself the next morning. If you’re really lucky you might even get condescended to by a heavily mutton-chopped man!

The Good Food and Wine Show hits Perth over 15-17 July, including an After Dark session on Friday 15th, and is held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre which is right next to the Perth Busport and thus perfectly located for the enthusiastic wine taster.

If you would like to win one of the two double passes up for grabs, you have two ways to go about it:

1) Simply “like” the new and exciting(!) Hold the Beef page on Facebook and leave a comment on the wall saying you want to enter the giveaway. Feel free to also share something you hate. Or declare your love for something. Maple bacon, perhaps.

2) You can also leave a comment on this post saying you would like to enter.

I will give one double pass away through each type of entry, and you’re welcome to enter both. I’ll randomly select the two winners on Monday 13th June and post them out to you that week.

Good luck!

(also, thanks to Tim for the trip down Sesame Street memory lane, and Erin for the maple bacon tease)

Hell yeah … I sooo want to enter. I hate that Sweet Chilli Sauce is the new Tomato Sauce. So boring & seems to be everywhere :(

Reply

Conor May 29, 2011 at 3:35 pm

I hadn’t really thought about it, but you’re right. More places now are doing their own tomato sauces, and sweet chilli has stepped up to the generic bottle sauce go-to.
Admittedly, there is still the occasional afternoon at the pub when some hot wedges and sweet chilli sauce hit the spot :)

Would you believe I hadn’t even heard about this yet?! I was reading an article in the Weekend Australian magazine this morning on fresh food-focused markets in Adelaide and bemoaning the lack of equivalent things here (although, in fairness, we do have some food markets), and all the while I should have been focusing on the upcoming excitement in July.

So thank you for letting me know, and yes, I would certainly like to enter :)

In your defence, Kari, it’s still a way off! Plus I’m sure you have been far too busy hearing about lots of other cool things. Probably actually just too busy being cool :D

My pleasure, and your entry is received!

Lol I’d enter except I was so overeager that I bought my tickets the minute they came available (no, really! I was waiting by my computer, refreshing the page very few minutes till it came available. You would’ve thought my life depended on it. Sad, I know.)

Reply

Conor May 29, 2011 at 5:33 pm

Haha that doesn’t surprise me in the slightest, Bryt! Sad, possibly, but sad in a food obsessed way which is the best way of all. Food dorks unite!

What was in there?

The maple kind?

I can’t go to GFWS this year as I will be in Melbourne. Poop. Although last year I was off my face drunk within about ten minutes of being inside the venue, and don’t really remember much of the rest of the day, except for coming home with two bottles of pomegranate liqueur and spending about three hours yapping absolute shite with an old school friend. Oh, and I cried pretty much the entire way home from the show to my friend’s place in West Perth, and then I think I promptly passed out, woke up and cried some more, and then somehow got home. I don’t know how I got home. I am assuming I got a taxi.

It’s probably best that I don’t go this year.

Conor May 31, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Um, wow. I clearly didn’t make full use of the facilities at the GFWS last year. I didn’t shed a single tear, except maybe at the horrendous service at the King St Cafe that we stopped in at on the way home for some snacks. Man that place sucks so bad.

Not sre I can promise to enjoy it for you too, as that may possibly actually kill me, but I shall try.

I would love to enter.
I really dont like when i pat my exceedingly hairy pet and then return to cooking, or have a cooking break to pay my baby and then have to wash my hands a trillion times.
Trying to make pasta with a dog at your feet wanting attention is pretty hard. We have quite a high bench and threw away our ‘pasta table’ so we have to have one person holding down the machine while the other does the rolling bit, which makes it hard because the bit that you have to hold down is pretty hard to apply pressure and not get my chubby hands in the way of the pasta. all the while trying not to pat an exceedingly cute puppy.

Ha ha, so relate to this. I got up this morning to find the lasagne pasta which I had carefully laid out on the dining table had all the all the edges nibbled. Thanks Beagle boy Baz. My beagle & miniature dachshund are my kitchen companions. Kitchen hand wash is a must in my home.

Conor May 31, 2011 at 2:15 pm

Haha, Julie, I hope Baz at least looked ashamed when you confronted his crumb crusted face!

Any food left out, in a draw, on a shelf, on a table, it is all free range as far as my dog is concerned.. He has been known to open draws to help himself to things.

Conor May 31, 2011 at 2:14 pm

It’s bad enough when you’re cooking a lot and just need to be washing foodstuffs off your hands through different cooking processes, so I can’t imagine how bad it would be if there were hairy dog pats in there too. My hands are dry enough from all the washing!

On the upside, it sounds like pasta making is more a bonding experience in your house these days :)

Yeah I think even with the offer of a couch to sleep on, the airfare might negate the freeness of the tix.

Too funny the whole checking your watch & putting a serious look on your face just to turn around amongst busy pedestrians, you cracked me up there.
Hey, I’d love to win tickets, would probably even hop a plane just to attend – great prize. Have an awesome day (still chuckling at the visual)

Hehe, thanks Anna :) I have to think.. if we are all doing this then surely we’re fooling no one? You have to feel sorry for people who are legitimately looking at their watch and then turning around, being lumped in with the likes of me.

Woo hoo!!!
Can you please enter me in your giveaway Miss Conor. Also can I crash at your place and go with you to the show ;)

My pet hate…. hmmm, being put on the spot :0 hehe

Conor June 3, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Yes Julie, as long as you promise to make me eat enough cheese samples to soak up the wine so I don’t make a fool of myself. A fool of myself any more than normal.

HA!

Hi Conor , would love to enter your GFWS comp!! What better way to spend a day off from work tasting and sampling what Perth has to offer under the one roof. Mind you, public transport could be in order after a few samples of alcohol. I’m known as a cadbury drinker, glass and a half!! By the way, love the videos :)
